The CAARA race net Net Control operator:

• Runs the CAARA Race Net as a directed net.
• Leads enforcement of protocols and guidelines.
• Is the one direct liaison to YuKanRun race directors/coordinators.
• Shares emergency situation and other important information with the YuKanRun Race Director.
• Is usually stationed at Start/Finish Line.
• Directs movement of CAARA Net personnel, e.g., permission to secure or leave checkpoint, move to new location, or function as Rover.
• All radio traffic goes through the net control operator. The net control operator may grant permission for two stations to talk to each other directly if circumstances warrant.
• Checks volunteers into and out of Net.
• Provides post-race report to CAARA Race Coordinator as needed.
• Relays post-race feedback from YuKanRun administrators to the CAARA Race Coordinator.
• Must be 100% reliable and clearly copyable at all the assigned locations.
• Must be 100% responsive to communications from stations on the net in a reliable and timely fashion.

Opening the net

This is CALLSIGN. My name is NAME. I will be net control for the EVENT NAME safety net. We are using the REPEATER CALLSIGN/NAME repeater, operating on FREQUENCY with a tone of CTCSS TONE. Before I open the net, if there are any stations with emergency or priority traffic for the repeater, please call now.

The EVENT NAME safety net is now active. I request that all stations not participating as volunteers for this event stand by for the duration of the net. This is a directed net. Please do not call other stations unless explicitly directed to do so by net control. This net will operate for approximately the next four hours.

Roll call

Pre-race instructions

This is CALLSIGN, net control for the EVENT NAME safety net, with some pre-race instructions for volunteers participating in today's net.

If you have traffic for the net, call net control and identify with your tactical callsign, then wait to be acknowledged by net control. When net control has confirmed receipt of your message, you can conclude your call with your FCC callsign to meet identification requirements.

Checkpoints report to the net when the lead runner and when the tail runner pass their location. There is no need to include other information such as bib number, gender or clothing colors.

Immediately report medical or serious incidents to net control and wait for any directions. If there is any delay in reaching net control and getting a response, call 911. When reporting an emergency to 911, identify your location by street address or by the nearest intersection.

Start of race

If the number of runners is known:

If the number of runners is unknown:

Operating notes

Respond to calling stations by repeating what you heard as the station's tactical call:

After receiving a message, repeat the station's tactical call and repeat or paraphrase the message:

Additional Notes

CAARA's Safety Team focuses on only the Half-Marathon when there is both a Half-Marathon and a 5K race. The exceptions are: The Newburyport races when the CAARA Lead Vehicle leads the 5K and not the Half-Marathon which is led by police. Only the Lead Vehicle needs to be reporting on the 5K. Checkpoints should not report 5K runner progress in order to avoid confusion.

Runners who can be identified as 5K runners who have made a wrong turn and are lost (or may not know they are lost) should be reported to net control. Net control will advise Race Director and YuKanRun Safety Van (by text group message) .

• Net control should have race documents printed out and available, namely:
  • Two copies of the staffing sheet
  • Race Day Info Sheet (especially locations of aid stations and toilets)
  • Course map
• Net control should review the Staffing Sheet to specifically identify which Checkpoints will see runners going outbound and inbound. This sets up a schedule for securing (releasing) checkpoint personnel.
• Net control should (like all volunteers) read the Volunteer Guidelines before every race. It is helpful for the net controller to have a copy of the Volunteer Guidelines accessible.
